Blackwater Falls State Park offers very dark skies that are unavailable to the majority of people in the surrounding states and even people that live in or near small towns. See: http://www.jshine.net/astronomy/dark_sky/ for a map of dark skies.
For dark skies, we avoid nights when the Moon is fuller in it's phase. The viewing of the night sky is best during a new Moon or the week prior. This year Saturday is the target night.
Yuri's Night 2017 (10 photo slideshow)
Yuri’s Night is a celebration of the birth of manned space flight that takes place all over the world. Yuri Gagarin’s first flight was on April 12, 1961. This was soon followed by the first American manned space flight on May 5, 1961 by Alan Shepard Jr. April 8th has been chosen as it falls on a Saturday. The celebration will take place at Camp Virgil Tate. About 200 people attended the last time. We plan to start at 6:00PM. (Earlier for KVAS members.) Refreshments and crafts will be from the Cross Lanes Library in the basement of the Lodge. Breezy Point will open before dusk. Scott Blake is in charge of this operation. He has several ideas, still in the planning stage. Jupiter is in opposition from the Sun. It rises at 7:40PM and Transits at 1:29AM. Sunset is at 8:48PM.
